Atlanta Last Minute

If you’re going to go to the south, why not head to the unofficial capital, Atlanta? This bustling city, with its new found growth and undeniable Southern charm, has become a place where young professionals, families and adventure seekers come to play. With many new company headquarters located in its limits, Atlanta has the means to provide visitors with many options when it comes to attractions and cultural experiences.

As it is a center for business and commerce, Atlanta boasts a number of convention centers and is home to the second busiest airport in the country. Contributing to its growth was Democratic National Convention in 1988, the Super Bowl XXVIII in 1994, and the Centennial Olympic Games in 1996. New parks, such as the breathtaking Centennial Olympic Park, new hotels and new businesses that catered to visitors during these events are now prepared to cater to last-minute visitors discovering the city for the first time.

Those who love to shop will be pleased to discover that the Atlanta area is one of the greatest shopping areas in the Southeast. Its resources expand even farther than just the city limits into the huge surrounding metropolitan area.

Atlanta, unlike many places in the south, enjoys four distinct seasons, so be sure to pack a coat if you’re heading down in the winter time. However, you can probably leave the scarves and boots at home, since it never gets quite as cold as it does up north. This mild weather is perfect for outdoor activities, such as a trip to Stone Mountain Park, where outdoor recreation meets exciting entertainment and a variety of attractions. This park, just 16 miles east of downtown, is one of the most visited attractions in the state.

Culture lovers will be thrilled by Atlanta’s music scene, which includes the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Opera and the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra, among others. At the Atlanta History Center, visitors can get a sense of what the South was like during the Civil War. Another great resource for history lovers is the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, which honors the civil rights leader with exhibits in its Visitor Center.

Another not-to-be-missed attraction is the Atlanta Botanical Garden, which boasts a huge greenhouse, a tropical rotunda, and outdoor nature walks. This is the place to go if you want to add a bit of lush, rainforest paradise to your last minute trip. There is even a kid’s area for those who have little ones along for the trip. And don't miss the Georgia Aquarium which is home to tens of thousands of marine animals.

As long as you’re in this interesting and dynamic city, you might as well check out some of its more unique aspects, such as Underground Atlanta. These six underground city blocks are now climate controlled and offer specialty shops, restaurants and entertainment to even the most discriminating visitor.

While the South as a whole has a lot to offer, Atlanta, in particular, can charm and fascinate those who want to experience this part of the country. With so much variety, it’s easy to find just what you desire in an exciting last minute vacation.
