For many of us in the Northern hemisphere, winter is in full force, bringing freezing temperatures, unforgiving snows, and precious few daylight hours. Even in parts of the world too far south to receive snowfall, the shorter days and cooler temperatures can have a negative effect on your mood. That means that this is the perfect time to plan a Spring vacation to give you something to look forward to once Winter ends. Or at the very least, you can fantasize about your dream vacation to distract you from the depressing weather! To inspire your own dream of spring, here are 6 destinations that are perfect for a Spring vacation.

Napa Valley, California, USA

Napa Valley is the heart of wine production in the States and it is well known for its many vineyards and wineries. Typically, people come here during harvest season in the Fall, which is when they hold most of their events and festivals. But savvy travelers know that visiting a popular destination during shoulder season is a great way to get better deals and avoid crowds. The overlooked Spring months offer blooming wildflowers, scenic drives, and still plenty of wine tastings and other winery hosted events. Whether you're drinking the wine, or just drinking in the stunning landscapes, Napa Valley is well worth a Spring vacation!

Kyoto, Japan

This is certainly not the first time Japan has shown up on one of our lists for its impeccable beauty, thanks in large part to the cherry blossoms that make their debut at the end of March. These beautiful pink blooms can be found all over the city, joining with Japan’s innovative and dynamic architecture to create some truly awe-inspiring landscapes. In Japanese culture, the cherry blossoms represent both the beauty and the brevity of life, as they serve as a reminder of the transient nature of existence on Earth. It's hard to imagine a better way to say goodbye to winter!

Amsterdam, Netherlands

From one culturally significant flower to another, the tulips of the Netherlands are an important part of Dutch culture, identity, and even of their economy. For hundreds of years, the tulip fields have attracted visitors from all over the world who come to see the vibrant landscapes. Rows upon rows of colorful tulips stretch out for what seems like forever, creating a vibrant horizon like nothing you’ve ever seen. If you are planning a visit, the Tulip Festival runs from March 20th to May 11th, so you have plenty of time to get in on the fun.

Honestly, Guanajuato is good for a visit any time of the year, thanks to their temperate weather. But Spring is considered to be shoulder season so you can experience the city without having to deal with as many other tourists. This is also the dry season, so you won’t have to worry about rain as much as you explore this inspiring UNESCO World Heritage city. Visit historic structures like Teatro Juárez, which first opened its doors in 1903. Pay your respects at religious sites like the Basilica of Our Lady of Guanajuato which displays the revered image of the Virgin of Guanajuato. See naturally mummified bodies at the Mummies of Guanajuato Museum. This city is so deeply steeped in culture and history, a simple stroll through its streets will fill you with inspiration!

Iceland

Visitors to Iceland usually come either in the Summer months for the temperate weather, or in the Winter months to see the Northern Lights. But Spring time actually offers a nice marriage between the two, with warmer weather then you’ll get in Winter, but with a chance to see the Northern Lights at night. Your chances won’t be as good as in Winter, but you have good odds even up to early April. Meanwhile, other attractions will be easier and more comfortable than when it is much colder. See geysers erupting, bath in natural hot springs, hike through untamed wilds, and explore magnificent caves of ice. Iceland in Spring time is the perfect place for all you nature lovers and wilderness explorers.

Anywhere, Mediterranean Sea

We could have narrowed this pick down to a single city, or even a single country, but why bother? Anywhere you go that touches the Mediterranean Sea is a worthwhile destination for a Spring vacation. Experience the immaculate white coastal town of Santorini, Greece for a taste of the old world. Head to Dubrovnik, Croatia to see many iconic settings where the HBO show Game of Thrones was filmed. Take a dip in the crystal-clear waters of the Amalfi Coast in Italy, pictured above. From the food, to the culture, to the wild landscapes, every inch of the Mediterranean is a tourist's dream!
